Simple organe consultatif de l’autorité coloniale, le Conseil Privé a joué un rôle influent, voire déterminant dans beaucoup de décisions de celle-ci. Cela est en effet perceptible au travers de certaines correspondances entre l’administration coloniale et certains chefs religieux et coutumiers sénégalais. Les documents d’archives nous apprennent beaucoup sur les relations tantôt difficiles et mitigées, tantôt empreintes de compromis entre colons et autochtones.
L’objectif de notre article est de tenter de donner, à travers quelques informations tirées du dépouillement d’un échantillon de procès-verbaux des délibérations du Conseil privé de l’AOF du Sénégal, un aperçu des éléments qui caractérisaient les relations entre le pouvoir colonial et les chefs religieux et coutumiers qui résidaient dans le territoire que l’on appelait « Sénégal et dépendances ».
Abstract :
The Privy Council was the sole advisory body of the colonial authority and played an influential, if not decisive, role in many decisions of the colonial authority. This can be seen through some correspondence between the colonial administration and certain Senegalese religious and customary leaders. Archival material teaches us a lot about relations that are sometimes difficult and mixed, and sometimes fraught with compromise between settlers and Aboriginal people. The purpose of our article is to attempt to give, through some information obtained from the recount of a sample of minutes of the deliberations of the Privy Council of French West Africa in Senegal, an overview of the elements that characterized the relations between colonial power and religious and customary leaders residing in the territory known as « Senegal and Dependencies ».
